School of Humanities
 School of Humanities comments:
THE ADD/DROP POLICY FOR ALL COURSES IN THE SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES IS THAT ADDS AND DROPS MUST BE EFFECTED PRIOR TO THE END OF THE SECOND WEEK OF CLASSES (October 12, 2007).
Any exception to the two week add/drop deadline must be requested by petition and require approval of the Undergraduate Dean of the School of Humanities. To attempt to add or drop a course after October 12, 2007, complete the Lat Add/Drop/Change petition (available in HIB 143) and at http://www.humanities.uci.edu/undergrad)
A lab fee may be assessed for those courses using the Humanities computer labs for class sessions.
Enrollment in lecture and discussion, lecture and studio, lecture and lab, lecture and studio and discussion, etc. is required for all courses offered by the School of Humanities, as well as any courses cross-listed with a Humanities offering.
For all non-EAD (electronic add/drop) courses in the School of Humanities, the waitlist for each course is DEACTIVATED at the end of the WebREG adjustment period (September 25, 2007 at 5:00 p.m.). If you have not been admitted to the class via the wait list by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 25, you are no longer on any wait list for any of the non-EAD courses in Humanities. Once instruction begins (September 27, 2007), all adds and drops are subject to the policy of each instructor.
Adds, drops and grade/unit changes (all non-EAD courses only) processed within the first two weeks of each quarter via the add/drop/change card require the signature of the instructor. There are two exceptions to this policy:
 1) HUMANITIES CORE COURSE (course codes 29000-29140):
All signatures for Humanities Core courses are obtained in their departmental office, HIB 185. Signatures will NOT be provided by instructors in the individual course sections.
 2) COMPOSITION/WRITING COURSES (Writing 37, 39A, 39AP with Lab, 39B, 39C, 139W):
Although enrollment changes for all composition courses are provided in the individual course sections, the card will NOT have an actual instructor's signature on it. Students who are allowed to add or drop any composition course mentioned above will be given a card that is pre-stamped with "COMPOSITION OFC" on it. Students who obtain a stamped card can submit the card directly to the Registrar's Office - no further signature is required.
Effective June 17 through August 31, most upper-division courses in the School of Humanities will be restricted to upper-division School of Humanities majors only. All NOR (new only reserve) restrictions, as well as the "M" (school major only) restrictions, will be removed at approximately 5:00 p.m. on August 31, 2007. Any qualified student is welcome to add into Humanities courses at that time (subject to space availability).
  Japanese
 Japanse course numbers 1 - 3:

Any student registered in any section of Japanese 1A, 2A, or 3A MUST attend the FIRST AND SECOND class meetings of the course or will be required to drop the course with a drop card.
Any student, continuing or new, with prior Japanese language background who wants to enroll in a Japanese language class for the first time in fall 2007, MUST take a placement test and do an oral interview. Students with no prior background in Japanese must be officially exempted from the placement test process by completing an exemption information sheet available from the UCI Testing Office in 1100 SSII. The test will be offered Tuesday, June 5, 2007 for new or continuing students. Contact the Testing Office through their website at http://www.testingoffice.uci.edu, by phone at (949)824-6207 or by email at testoff@uci.edu for details about exam registration and dates of placement tests. Once you have the written exam results, contact Prof. Morioka at akemi@uci.edu to schedule an oral interview, which is the last part of the placement process.
  Japanse   1A     FUNDAMENTALS

Japanese 1A is designed for students with no background in Japanese language whatsoever. Students with no prior knowledge of Japanese may enroll directly into 1A for fall, subject to consent of Instructor (a completed language background exemption form must be presented to the instructor the first day of class. The form is available from the UCI Testing Office, 1100 SSII).
